Colbert County

Tuscumbia and the floors in it

Gray and white flake epoxy porch floor at a brick house with a wooden front door, Tuscumbia

Geographically Tuscumbia is the Colbert County seat in the Shoals, which puts it comfortably inside our area.

Tuscumbia is largely historic homes around Spring Park and older neighborhoods, so the slabs we see there have a family resemblance.

With a historic downtown and Shoals area industry anchoring the local economy, commercial floors here work for a living.

Tuscumbia sits close enough to Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Cherokee that we frequently run them together.

Tuscumbia runs on a historic downtown and Shoals area industry, and buildings tied to that see hard use.

Older slabs often need repair or an overlay before any finish is worth putting down.

The slab underneath

Slabs around Tuscumbia vary more than people expect, even within one neighborhood. Two houses on the same street can have concrete finished completely differently, which changes the prep.

The prep on a good floor takes longer than the coating does.

Whatever is on the slab now comes off mechanically before anything new goes down.

Interior work in Tuscumbia runs year round because the building is conditioned. Exterior slabs, porches, patios and pool decks get scheduled against the forecast, since resin cures chemically and a cold or soaking slab changes how that goes.

Sometimes the honest answer is that a slab is not worth coating. If a crack is still moving, if sections have dropped, or if there is water coming up through the concrete with nowhere to go, a coating will fail and take your money with it. We would rather tell you that in Tuscumbia than sell you a floor twice.

We quote the floor first, in person. Once you accept, the install gets booked as a block rather than squeezed between other jobs, because a resin floor cannot be half finished and left overnight. For a Tuscumbia job that usually means we hold consecutive days and give you the dates up front.

Whatever the room is, the sequence does not change: open the concrete, fix what needs fixing, then put down the system the slab will actually hold.

What Tuscumbia usually asks for

Those get asked for most often around Tuscumbia, though the right answer is always the room in front of us. Every system we install is available here, and the right one is chosen from the slab in front of us rather than from a list.

Polished Concrete

Given historic homes around Spring Park and older neighborhoods, polished concrete suits a lot of what we see in Tuscumbia.

How the floor ends up looking depends on how deep we go. A light grind leaves the surface close to how it was poured. Going deeper opens the slab and exposes the sand, then the stone, so you get a terrazzo look out of concrete that was already there.

Polishing is mechanical, not a coating. We run diamond tooling across the slab in steps, each one finer than the last, and the gloss comes from the concrete closing up rather than from anything we put on it.

It reflects light, so a dim warehouse or basement gets noticeably brighter without new fixtures. Sweeping and an occasional damp mop is the entire maintenance routine.

Urethane Cement Flooring

Given historic homes around Spring Park and older neighborhoods, urethane cement flooring suits a lot of what we see in Tuscumbia.

Thermal shock is what happens when a floor at room temperature gets hit with boiling water or a steam cleaner. The slab and the coating expand at different rates. Urethane cement is formulated to move with it.

These rooms get integral cove base, so the floor turns up the wall instead of stopping at a joint. There is no seam at the wall line for water to work into.

It can go over slabs with moisture that would fail an epoxy. Cove base and the right slope mean water goes to the drain rather than sitting.

Concrete Resurfacing

Concrete resurfacing fits Tuscumbia well, both for the housing and because of a historic downtown and Shoals area industry.

Once the overlay has cured it can be stained, sealed, or textured, so a driveway that was only ever gray can come back as something else entirely.

An overlay is a thin layer of polymer modified cement bonded over the slab you already have. Structurally the old concrete keeps doing its job. The overlay gives you a fresh surface to finish.

Far less cost and disruption than tear out and replacement. Surface spalling, scaling, and pitting go away.

Questions from Tuscumbia

If yours is not here, call (205) 238-8111 and ask.

(205) 238-8111

How far is Tuscumbia from you?

Close enough that it is ordinary work. We are based in Huntsville and cover about 100 miles out, which takes in all of Colbert County.

What do you install most around Tuscumbia?

Mostly polished concrete, urethane cement flooring and concrete resurfacing. That follows the building stock here more than anything else, and your floor may point somewhere different once we have looked at it.

Do you do commercial work in Tuscumbia?

Yes, and it is a real part of what we do here. With a historic downtown and Shoals area industry locally, there are buildings whose floors have to survive a cleaning routine, not just look right.

Do you have to make a special trip to Tuscumbia?

Rarely. Muscle Shoals, Sheffield are close by and we are through here regularly, so scheduling is not usually the hard part.

Can you quote over the phone for Tuscumbia?

We can give you a range so you know whether to go further, but the real figure comes after somebody has stood on the slab.

Can I talk to a previous customer?

Yes. We would rather give you somebody whose floor is like yours than a general list, so tell us what you are planning.
