Fultondale and the floors in it

Copper metallic epoxy floor in a wood panelled room with built in shelving, Fultondale

Fultondale sits just north of Birmingham off I-65, about as far from us as most of the towns we cover.

Fultondale is largely rebuilt and newer housing following the 2021 tornado, plus older stock, so the slabs we see there have a family resemblance.

What gets built here follows interstate commerce and proximity to downtown Birmingham, and that decides what needs finishing.

Work in Fultondale usually lands alongside jobs in Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills.

Anyone who knows Fultondale knows it for interstate commerce and proximity to downtown Birmingham.

Patios and pool decks need a coating rated for UV and a grit that works when wet.

What Fultondale usually asks for

Those get asked for most often around Fultondale, though the right answer is always the room in front of us. Every system we install is available here, and the right one is chosen from the slab in front of us rather than from a list.

Flake Epoxy Flooring

Flake epoxy flooring comes up in Fultondale because the stock here is rebuilt and newer housing following the 2021 tornado, plus older stock.

Flake goes on while the base coat is still wet. We broadcast it to refusal, which means we keep throwing chips until the floor will not take any more, then scrape back the loose material once it has set.

Broadcasting to refusal is what makes the finish consistent. A light scatter leaves thin spots that show as blotches once the clear coat goes over them.

Chips and scuffs disappear into the pattern instead of standing out. Blend choices run from near neutral greys to blues, greens, and browns.

Urethane Cement Flooring

Given rebuilt and newer housing following the 2021 tornado, plus older stock, urethane cement flooring suits a lot of what we see in Fultondale.

Thermal shock is what happens when a floor at room temperature gets hit with boiling water or a steam cleaner. The slab and the coating expand at different rates. Urethane cement is formulated to move with it.

These rooms get integral cove base, so the floor turns up the wall instead of stopping at a joint. There is no seam at the wall line for water to work into.

It can go over slabs with moisture that would fail an epoxy. Cove base and the right slope mean water goes to the drain rather than sitting.

Concrete Resurfacing

Given rebuilt and newer housing following the 2021 tornado, plus older stock, concrete resurfacing suits a lot of what we see in Fultondale.

Once the overlay has cured it can be stained, sealed, or textured, so a driveway that was only ever gray can come back as something else entirely.

An overlay is a thin layer of polymer modified cement bonded over the slab you already have. Structurally the old concrete keeps doing its job. The overlay gives you a fresh surface to finish.

It gives you a clean canvas for stain or a coating. Far less cost and disruption than tear out and replacement.

The slab underneath

The thing we look for first on a Fultondale slab is moisture. Concrete on grade can pass vapor upward for its whole life, and a sealed coating over an active slab lifts eventually no matter who installed it.

A floor that peels was almost always a floor that was not prepped.

Whatever is on the slab now comes off mechanically before anything new goes down.

Sometimes the honest answer is that a slab is not worth coating. If a crack is still moving, if sections have dropped, or if there is water coming up through the concrete with nowhere to go, a coating will fail and take your money with it. We would rather tell you that in Fultondale than sell you a floor twice.

We quote the floor first, in person. Once you accept, the install gets booked as a block rather than squeezed between other jobs, because a resin floor cannot be half finished and left overnight. For a Fultondale job that usually means we hold consecutive days and give you the dates up front.

Clear the room before we arrive. For a garage that means everything off the floor, including shelving feet and anything mounted low on the wall that we need to cut in behind. We can work around a few heavy items, but the more of the slab that is open, the better the edges come out.

Whatever the room is, the sequence does not change: open the concrete, fix what needs fixing, then put down the system the slab will actually hold.

Do you actually take jobs in Fultondale?

We do. Jefferson County is part of our normal area and Fultondale is inside it. The same people who quote it install it.

Which floors suit Fultondale properties?

Around here it is usually flake epoxy flooring, urethane cement flooring and concrete resurfacing, because the local stock is rebuilt and newer housing following the 2021 tornado, plus older stock.

Do you do commercial work in Fultondale?

Yes, and it is a real part of what we do here. With interstate commerce and proximity to downtown Birmingham locally, there are buildings whose floors have to survive a cleaning routine, not just look right.

How soon could you get to Fultondale?

Usually within a few days to look at it. We are often working Birmingham, Hoover in the same stretch, so fitting Fultondale into a run is normally straightforward.

How do you price a Fultondale floor?

By looking at it. Size matters, but so does the condition of the slab and whether anything has to come off first. A number without a visit is a guess.

Can I talk to a previous customer?

Yes. We would rather give you somebody whose floor is like yours than a general list, so tell us what you are planning.
